Installment effect and evaluation conclusionND filter is short for Neutral Density filter. It is also called neutral gray scale filter or neutral density filter. It weakens the light through the lens to reduce exposure by a grey transparent advanced optical glass. The ND filter has a number of options that ND2, ND4, ND8... the number behind ND means that the ability to block the light. What I am testing is the NiSi ultra-thin ND filter -- NiSi Fader ND2-400.
This ND filter of NiSi has a very special point that with frame self-lock proprietary technology when you turn to the Min or Max, the frame will lock automatically and reduce light.

The introduction of product packing

The packing of this NiSi ND filter is a black paper box. It is using the hot sand processing, making it not easy to wear. On upper left corner of the box, a product brand is printed in there. On the upper right corner, there is the product model. Product specifications are on the lower right corner. The back of packing box reads product details and a security check code. You can scratch the coating and phone 400- for anti-counterfeit query. Through the bottom of the box logo we can see that the product packing box is made from the recyclable materials.

Remove the packing box, there is a gray translucent plastic packing box. In the center, it is the LOGO, an eye-catching LOGO.

The introduction of packing details

Plastic packaging box of this product is using the hanging button switch. When it is opened it is easy to display, and when shutting down it can supply more effective protection to make sure product safety.

Silica gel seal ring

According to the picture we can see there is a yellow circle is designed outside of the plastic packing box with a of silicon rubber sealing ring. It ensures the sealing performance, and can prevent moisture intrusion.


EVA gasket in the box

Open the plastic box, we can see black EVA gasket design inside, which makes sure the products will be firmly fixed in the box. That can protect the ND filter form damage in a certain extent of waving. The gasket material is made from the green material.

Introduction of outer frame of the product

The frame color of this ND glass is black. There are brand name, model and specifications and so on printed on the periphery. This product is adjustable light attenuation glass so there are 9 scale intervals printed from Min to Max on the periphery of frame. The white characters are so striking for being fixed on the black frame. One thing should be noted is: this product has frame self lock proprietary technology, which means when the frame is turned from Min to Max, the frame can lock automatically and that is good for positioning.

This product frame is made from high quality aeronautical aluminum with periphery designed with turning process and the edge designed as zigzag shape. All of these can ensure a good comfort of product in antiskid and feel with better rotating feel. Anodizing treatment has been carried out to the frame, which makes the product more strong and durable. I have rotated it several times but not any whitening is found.

Introduction of the lens

The filter I test today is the NiSi Fader ND2-400 ND filter. Its specifications are for 77mm. According to the official introduction, this section of ND filter can also be the other specifications, if you require that. The lens is made from manufacturing of high quality optical materials to ensure the quality of its products. However, the ND filter does not use double-sided of plating process.

The picture reflected the color changes while I rotated from the Min end to the intermediate scale, and then rotated to the Max end of the lens. Min represents ND2, and the Max means ND400. The other seven scales are designed for photographers to record and adjust the dimming value easily in shooting. It does not represent a specific ND value.

Product tests of waterproof

During the working time, all filters are protecting the lens from oil and water except some special function of its own. How will this ND filter perform when putting in the water? I have done the following test.

According to the picture above we can see that when the water is on or dropping from the lens, its performance is not ideal, by leaving a very clear watermark in the filter. However, after simple cleaning, water trace disappeared, and the filter is cleaning again.

Product tests of oil proof

After the waterproof test, we are going to see the performance of this ND lens on oil stain proof next. Since there are no products that can completely eradicate oil stain, it is qualified in the test as long as the oil stain can be easily wiped.

In previous test of oil proof of NiSi golden circle of LR UV lens， the NiSi product showed satisfactory performance. However, it is a pity that this ND lens is not as perfect in oil proof as the author spent much energy cleaning the cloud of oil stain on the lens finally. So I suggests that you should better avoid touching the lens with dirty hands when using this product, otherwise it may take a long time to clean it.

We know that theoretically the reduced light has no effect on the color of the origin object. But owing to factors like crafts, the larger the coefficient behind ND is and the greater influence on color temperature is. Next, let us see the performance of this NiSi ND lens on color imaging.

This time, I use Nikon D700 camera with Nikon AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens for the test. Without using ND lens and adjusting scale value of ND lens in the shooting, I take three photos each time and choose the best one to compare the 100% picture shot of key region.

Of the above test samples, the first is one without using ND lens and test picture left shows the shooting state as the author turns the scale value of ND lens till the Max end. It indicates that after installing NiSi ND lens, the color is inclined to warm tone. As the ND value increased, the scene got much darker, details becoming more unclear, and the scene was close to total darkness until it reached Max end.

This time, I will still use Nikon D700 camera with Nikon AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens for the test. Without using ND lens and adjusting scale value of ND lens for the test. As there will be cases of slight dark corner and black scene with this product when the ND value is increased, I made some treatment of the above sharpness test chart on white with PS. Moreover, we can see from the above test chart that the sharpness begins to reduce with the increasing of ND value and presents significant reduce at the end of Max.

Comparison of outdoor samples

ND lens is mainly used in cases of low shutter speed, deep shooting of shallow scenes and ISO controlling for more visual presentation of ND lens effect. I particularly took two comparative pictures of traffic streams. Let’s take a look at the effect.

The above two comparative pictures both used the same aperture and ISO. It is obvious that after using ND lens, the shutter speed slowed down significantly and the exposure time got longer.

Installment effect and evaluation conclusion

After having a try this time, I found that adjustable reduced lens of this NiSi Fader ND2-400 is more delicate in package compared with other ND lens. The button switch can effectively protect internal product and the sealed silicon loop can prevent moisture to a certain degree. Besides, the turning patterns and jagged edges of this ND lens give a good hand feeling when making turns. When the author adjusts ND values in actual use, the patented technology of frame self-locking is easy to position. But the surface of the ND lens is not with coating crafts so the water and oil proof is slightly inadequate. Currently, this product is quoted as 950 RMB on the official website of Tmall.

Evaluation conclusion:

Advantages: 1. Patented technology of frame self-locking, it makes the filter easy to position.
2. Sealed loop design on the plastic package, prevent moisture intrusion.
3. Turning patterns designed on the frame periphery with good hand feeling.

Disadvantages: Oil-proof and waterproof effect are to be improved.
